FAQ’s

ARE THE FREY BIKES ROAD LEGAL?
Due to the fact that the range of Frey bikes use a motor of between 1600W and 1800W, they definitely surpass the legal road limits. This is actually 6 times the legal allowed limit of 250W! They also have a maximum speed approaching 38 mph well beyond the permitted 15.5mph in the UK. Finally the bikes also offer the ability to ride with ‘Throttle Only’ and without ‘Pedal Assist’ which also renders them as ‘private Off Road Only’ not for use on the public highway or pavement.
CAN YOU RIDE WITH NO POWER ASSIST?
Yes, there is an option, via the display, to reduce assistance to Zero or simply into a ‘Pedal Bike Mode’ which allows the rider to simply pedal as normal. However, due to the increased weight due to batteries it’s always easier to simply add just the Level One in ECO mode to assist just a small amount to compensate. As a rider you can choose to opt for High Power/Short Distance or Low Power/Long Distance, but at the same time the addition of pedalling the bike will extend the battery range. Most importantly if the battery is completely depleted it’s still possible to simply ride to your destination with just pedal power.
WHY WOULD I NEED EBIKE POWER AT ALL?
Many purist cyclists may frown upon the use of ebikes, but after riding with one many are converted. If you consider a scenario of a strong cyclist wanting to ride with a friend or family member who is less capable. Should the more capable cyclist hold back and simply try to ride slower for the other? Surely this almost limits their enjoyment and the friend feel guilty. When we consider an ebike scenario, riders can adjust the level of assistance to even out the amount of effort. In a similar way the power assist will allow the riders to choose the level of workout and challenge that they have from the ride. Finally the distance travelled can be far greater, especially with ‘Eco’ mode.
IS THE POWER OUTPUT PARTICULARLY FAST?
The rider is in control of the speed, both through the gear employed, the effort in pedalling and the level of power chosen. The power to weight ratio for the bikes is fantastic as they are all in the range of low to mid 30kg, but have 6 times the power of standard UK bikes.
HOW MANY SETTINGS ARE THERE FOR POWER?
There are two sections for power accessed via the buttons on the handlebars. These are ‘Eco Mode’ and ‘Sport Mode’, within which each has 5 levels of power. The rider can choose to simply add as much assistance as they wish, or alternatively, once the crank has turned less than a full cycle the thumb throttle can be used with no need to pedal. In essence the bike becomes more like a motorcycle instead. Why would this be important? In the same way a rider might use pedal assist to avoid excess stress on injuries or simply make their ride a little less challenging, the ‘Throttle only’ option might help a fatigued rider get to their desired destination. It also allows a rider to summit a climb faster, to potentially enjoy the downhill ride more easily. Thus they might complete more rides and a greater distance in the same period.
WHAT IS THE RANGE OF THE BATTERY?
This is a hard one to quantify, as the results will be dependant on many factors, such as rider weight, terrain style, even down to tyre tread. Hence, the data figures quoted for each model in the ‘Specifications’ section show a range of distance. The lower is based on a high power and challenging terrain etc, the upper figure on optimum performance in ideal situations.
WHAT IS THE LIFE OF A BATTERY?
A battery of this kind will usually have a lifespan of 1,000 cycles and at that point have only lost around 15 to 20% of it’s charging capability. If we were to average 25 miles per charge that equates to over 25,000 miles travelled and the battery is still operable.
DOES THE EX PRO MODEL ALWAYS COME WITH DUAL BATTERIES?
In the UK the Ex Pro model will always be supplied with both the ‘internal’ and ‘frame mount’ batteries. This extra ‘frame mount’ battery can be removed if desired, and the connection protected with a specific optional cover. When both batteries are mounted and the recharge can be conducted at the same time with the use of a splitter, included with the bike. This reduces the charge time from 2×5 to around 8 hours total.
WHERE ARE FREY BIKES MADE?
Frey are a relatively new bike company, started in 2013, based in Jinhua, China. They are producing quality bikes, using high end components. The Bafang motors and controllers used are also well tried and tested. The motors perform at much higher power than standard UK bikes, but offer high build quality and reliability.
WHY ARE THE UK COLOUR OFFERINGS NOT NECESSARILY THE SAME AS THE FACTORY?
Due to the market trends, European styles and availability the UK will not necessarily offer the full range of colours and sizes in each model.
ARE THERE ANY SPECIFIC SAFETY FEATURES?
Yes, the bikes are fitted with Magura ‘eStop’ Brakes, which use a micro sensor in the lever. If the lever is moved it cuts power to stop the bike moving even if the pedals are turned or the thumb throttle is depressed.
WHAT IS THE WARRANTY WITH THE BIKES?
The Frey bike will receive an 18 month warranty on all components and electrics. The frame is covered for a full 36 months. For example consumable items such as brake pads and tyres are excluded from the warranty. Bikes will need to be serviced as per the service schedule and the supplying dealer will action any warranty issues on behalf of Frey. Warranty issues will be dealt with at the UK point of purchase only.

HOW SHOULD A FREY BIKE BE CLEANED?
As with all ebikes it is important not to ‘power wash’ the motor, battery, display, and cabling. It is always recommended to be cautious and whenever possibly use a simple brush and bucket of water or a very low powered hose to rinse the bike. Use of a power wash can cause ingress of water to motor and electric seals and thus internal damage.
